Pollens
- Seasonal allergies are usually caused by three main types of pollen: trees, grass, and weeds. Generally, patients know their sensitive pollen season: spring/early summer (trees), summer/early fall (grass), late summer/fall (weeds). It's important to know exactly what you're allergic to so you can take appropriate action. Stay inside if it's windy and warm. Pollen counts tend to rise on dry, warm and windy days. Go outside at the right times. Pollen counts are highest in the morning (5am-10am), so if you need to go outside, try to do it when counts are low. Many patients appreciate the medical advice of delegating lawn mowing, weed pulling, and other gardening chores that stir up pollen allergens. Remove clothes you've worn outside and shower at night to rinse pollen from your skin and hair before getting into bed.
- Molds grow in damp, humid areas inside and outside of your home. To avoid and limit exposure to molds, clean your kitchen and bathrooms regularly with mold and mildew remover. Wipe away any standing water in the kitchen, bathroom, and shower area. Using a ventilation fan when you take a shower also helps reduce the chance of mold growth. Using a dehumidifier can also be used to reduce humidity in your home to less than 50%. Regularly changing the filters in your furnace and air conditioner can often help reduce in door molds.
- Animals shed dander (small cells) from their fur, hair and feathers. Animal dander and saliva can remain in furniture, mattresses and carpets. To avoid and limit exposure you can keep your pets out of your bedroom, off furniture, mattresses and rugs as well as keeping them outside. Giving your pets weekly baths can also be helpful in reducing dander.
- House dust allergies are very common due to tiny transparent dust mites that live on human skin. Dust mites live in carpets, upholstered furniture, mattresses, pillows and stuffed animals. Patients can limit exposure by using dust mite barriers on mattresses, box springs, pillows, washing bedding in hot water once a week, removing carpet from your bedroom, removing stuffed animals from sleeping areas. and vacuuming your home regularly with an efficient vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter.
- There are many agents that can give off strong, irritating odors, they can include perfumes, aftershaves, body sprays (for women and men), cleaning agents, chemical glues, and insecticides. To avoid and limit exposure wear a protective mask and having good ventilation in any room that you are using chemical agents.
- Food allergy is an immune system reaction that occurs soon after eating a certain food. Even a tiny amount of allergy-causing food can trigger signs and symptoms such as digestive problems, hives or swollen airways. In adults, the foods that most often trigger allergic reactions include peanuts, shellfish, fish, and tree nuts (walnuts). In children, common problem foods include eggs, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, and wheat. Identification of food allergies, avoidance, supportive care, medications, and desensitization remain the foundation of care.
