Scar Revisions

About

There are many types of scars that have been caused by the healing of wounds caused by injury, disease or an accident. Scar revision surgery is a plastic surgery procedure to improve the appearance and condition of your scar(s).

The different types of scars are:
  • Subtle scars are minor surface irregularities or minor discolorations and do not cause physical discomfort. These can include scars from previous surgeries, minor injuries and acne.
  • Hypertrophic scars are thick clusters of scar tissue that develop over a wound site.  They are usually raised, are often red, and may cause some discomfort. Over time they can widen.
  • Keloid scars are larger and can be itchy and painful. They expand past the original wound dimensions., usually they develop in areas with little underlying fat and can appear anywhere on your body.
  • Contractures will occur in areas where there a significant loss of tissue and are commonly found on burn victims.  They can cause movement restrictions when underlying tissue and skin pull together during the healing process.

The most common types of scar revision are surface treatments, reducing uneven pigmentation and softening their appearance.  Surgical treatments remove either the top layers of skin or alter the existing scar tissue.  Treatment options can include laser therapy, dermabrasion, and skin bleachers.  Some deep scars require surgical removal.
